A Study on Factors Affecting Burnout of Staffs Taking Care of Elders in Nursing Facilities
Choi Hee-Kyung

Abstract
Due to the long tradition of family care for the elderly in Korea, research interest has been rarely paid on social care workforce. The study attempts to examine the work stress, work/family interference, discrimination, and burnout especially focused on female workers who are the majorities of social care workforce. 502 staffs were surveyed including nurses, social workers, and direct care workers working at diverse types of nursing facilities in Busan and Daegu area. The result of the study indicates that they are low paid and overloaded in spite of relatively high level of education. Most of them are young, female, and have short (less than 3 years) period of work. In addition, they show severely high level of work stress and burnout, which can cause deterioration of care services as result. Younger workers in particular less than 30 years old are more vulnerable to work stress and burnout mainly because they have only limited experiences of contacting and caring physically and cognitively impaired older people. Female respondents reported more often to experience diverse discriminations related to work and showed severe work/family interference, which is closely associated with higher level of burnout. Therefore, it is necessary to relieve stresses related to work and to prevent burnout of staffs in nursing facilities. Also it is suggested to improve wage and work conditions of social care providers to make social care for the elderly a decent job as well as to assure the quality of social care services for the elderly.
